Baking is suitable for people with all levels of skills; it can be simple or complex and everyone can contribute. Its versatility makes it an apt occupation for inclusion in therapy programmes in many contexts. Research has shown that engaging in baking improves concentration, increases coordination and builds confidence, leading to an increased feeling of self-esteem and wellbeing.
Selecting a recipe that reminds your loved one of growing up or happy memories may be a good place to start. Each recipe can be tailored and adapted to suit the needs of your loved one based on their functional and cognitive ability. This will promote optimum engagement and safety within the task. The task may follow a structure of your loved one assisting with decorations while you manage the chopping and hot water if required. Further recommendations and adaption of the task could be provided while attending the group sessions in the wellness centre.
